The recurring sharp shoulders (Hervé Léger, Donna Karan) gave this season a defined edge and were throughout complimented by the structural diligence of collections such as Jeremy Laing, Alexander Wang and Narciso Rodriguez. Rodriguez in particular reigned in his sharp, form fitting style with a conscious mix of both monochromatic and bold colour palettes that delineated both his metal zipper detailing and decisive silhouettes. Between the pulses of colour and the sleek, head hugging knits, Roudriguez had managed to successfully achieve his desire for “imaginary futurism” without compromising on elegance or stylistic integrity.

Debuting her dancing talent to the fashion world in Gaultier’s Fall/Winter 07 show, Rocha has consistently exhibited qualities beyond those typically attributed to the muted breed of runway models. Her bright personality resists the catty stereotypes and sharp-tongued critics of the fashion sphere, rising above the mundane and embossing the runways with her skill and enthusiastic spark. This season Rocha sports both a new cut and flaming hue, and has graced the catwalk for Diane von Furstenberg and Rag & Bone.

the dark ages;
let’s go (icelandic version)

As the world crumbles around us, it appears that the global citizens of the world are perhaps becoming less concerned with the colour and sexuality of their political candidates and are finally tuning into the more critical issues at hand and how these potentials leaders are equipped to solve them. Earlier this year we heralded in the world’s first African American president with much fanfare and mass jubilation. So here’s one for the girls: Iceland has just picked the world’s first openly gay Prime Minister. Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir walks into parliament this month with similarly grim economic issues to wrestle with as Obama. Let’s hope the 67 year old will lead the new coalition government with a clear focus on how to turn things around for Icelanders and tackle their soaring inflation rates.
If you can read Icelandic, here is her personal blog.
