The year is 1931. The music is composed by Fabian Andre and Wilbur Schwandt, with the lyrics penned by Gus Kahn. Originally recorded in up-tempo big band style by Wayne King and his Orchestra with vocals by Ernie Birchill; this gem of a song skipped through the voice boxes of a succession of notable songbirds and crooners including Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald, Frankie Lane and Louis Armstrong. Contemporary renditions include Cass Elliot of The Mamas and the Papas, Michael Bublé and She & Him (above), as well as a couple of intentional interpretations from France (Enzo Enzo) and the Czech Republic (Lucie Bílá).

The photographs of Daniel Jackson have long inhabited my image archives as personal favourites, but it was only today upon browsing through his latest Acne Paper editorial, that I was struck by the fact that is was the same (albeit discrete) mastery as exhibited in the beautiful September 06 i-D set featuring the fresh-eyed Sasha Pivovarova (below right). And whilst it is clear that Jackson’s relationship with New York based stylist Alastair McKinn culminates time and time again in unruffled exquisiteness, Jackson obviously harbours a sharp leaning towards an additional cooler and more austere palette. The Acne Paper editorial reveals an understanding of the nude that has typically vacated the pages of a contemporary fashion portfolio. In his monotone work there are traces of Paolo Roversi; faint whisperings amongst vignetted backgrounds but without the romantic softness of Roversi’s long exposures; and consequently resulting in a sterner and more controlled application of tones and contours through the use of his lens. Indeed it is his colours that leave an indelible imprint, weaving between realism and hyper-realism and submerging his subject in an unflinching light.
Reminiscent of early Freud, except through snap of a shutter.
